Rickkert Reviews: OK Cool – Surrealist

Ok Cool is the side project of the Weekend Run Club’s Bridget Stiebris and Haley Blomquist, and they just dropped their sophomore Ep “Surrealist”. With the band being born out of the covid lockdown it’s not surprising the album has a bit of a time-capsule feel to it but this doesn’t mean that’s the only subject featured on the album.

The opening track “I Should Buy a Sword” reels you in with its gloomy feel and witty lyrics. The indie garage feel drips through to the rest of the Ep with it’s short and sweet songs.

Throughout the songs you can feel the band still growing and evolving their sound or just trying something cool. The time capsule feel comes back on tracks like “I Should Buy a Sword” and “Five Finger Exploding Heart Technique” but the songs also deal with subjects of sexuality and grief.

Taking listeners on a journey through these experiences and dripping them in emo feels and “Kill Bill” References” the band shows their desire to be more layered and seems to also want to give a massage about the power of woman or just express their love for Uma Turman.

While this is an Ep I really need to be in the mood for it is nevertheless a great tale to follow and I look forward to seeing what the future brings for “Ok Cool” maybe an album referencing “Pulp Fiction”

Songs from “Surrealist” you should listen to
