5 Bands I Think You Should Check Out: April 2021 (Kingsday Special)

Because the last Wednesday of this month is around Kingsday again, it’s time for another Kingsday edition filled with Dutch bands. Let’s get into it.   

Coral Springs

Coral Springs is a pop punk four-piece formed in 2011. The band currently consists of vocalist Jo Bouwmeester , guitarist Timon Hannaart, guitarist Joris Griffioen ,bassist Siebe Anès and drummer Remy jackobs.

The band has released two short ep’s and one full length album “Always Lost, Never Found” (2019)

In terms of the live circuit the band has shared the stage with artists and acts such as “I Against I” , “Make It Last” and “Drunktank”

What I like about their sound is how they mix their influences giving a retro pop punk vibe but focusing more on the punk side of things making their sound almost skate-punk. 

Song I recommend are “Fairweather Friend”, “Anxiety” and “Anchor”

James Burki

James Burki

Similar to Bronnie, James Burki is both the name of the band and of the lead vocalist. The band James Burki is an Indie/synthpop band hailing from the Hague. Formed somewhere around 2019 the band currently consists of vocalist/guitarist James Burki, guitarist Jurre Kleiberg, bassist Philip Christopher, drummer Wessel Hissink.

The band’s discography currently consists of one EP and a handful of singles with their latest release being the single “Hold On (2020)

On the side of live shows the band has played with acts such as “CooCoo”, “NMBRS” and “The Spvrk

What I like about their sound are the 80s inspired synths and their mellow vibes, reminding me of acts such as “The 1975” and “The Band Camino

Songs I recommend are “Brother, We’re Here to Dance”, “Where You Are” and “Do It Like That”       

Left Alive

Left Alive is a Dutch pop punk five-piece. Founded around 2019 the band currently consist of vocalist Claire Verbeek, guitarist Joris Griffioen (yes the same that plays in Coral Springs) guitarist Erwin, bassist Sjoerd Hoogewerf, and drummer Max.

The band has released one EP and a handful of singles so far, with their latest release being a Christmas cover.

In terms of live shows the band has shared the stage with artists like “Skir”, “The Hearted” and “Valice”

What I like about their sound is how they mix pop punk with danceable pop influences.

Songs I recommend are “Leave It”, “The Man” and “Keep Reaching”       

Golden Boy

Golden Boy is a Dutch indie band, formed somewhere around 2019 the band currently consists of vocalist Gigi van der Veer, guitarist Merlijn Baartman, guitarist Rasmus Bisschop, bassist Teun van der Maarel  and drummer Gijs Hameete.

The band has released one EP and a handful of singles thus far.

In the sense of live playing the band has played shows with acts such as “New Bliss”, “Make Out Molly” and “Moon Ape”

What I like about their sound is how they incorporate a garage rock feel with a psychedelic vibe. Giving their overall sound a 70s feel. 

Song I recommend are “(S)undress”, “Cellar Life” and “Second Encore”  

Mayleaf

Mayleaf

Mayleaf is a supergroup out of the Dutch scene, consisting of vocalist Ilah van der Baas(2 Years To Apocalypse), drummer Joël Heijda,(No Turning Back) guitarist Michiel van Iersel(Noyalty), guitarist Adrian Delange(Call It Off) and bassist Robbert van Caem(Wasted Bullet)

The group has released one Ep and a couple of singles, with their latest release being the single “Just Breathe” (2021)

In the way of touring the band has shared the stage with acts such as “Microwave”, “Bony Macaroni” and “The Positives

What I like about their sound is their use of fuzz and their 90 alt feel, in a way they remind me of older grunge bands but also of bands like “Milk Teeth”

Song I recommend are “Found You Out”, “Burn” and “Just Breathe”
